Who was Tiger apologizing to?

On Friday Tiger Woods held a controlled “press conference” in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida where he supposedly apologized for his well publicized extramarital affairs. Like most things that Tiger Woods does, the event was tightly scripted. He read from a prepared text and did not take any questions from the press.

Who exactly was Tiger Woods apologizing to?

It sure wasn’t for my benefit because I could give a damn what Tiger Woods does; I have a lot more important things to think about. I think the same goes for most of the American public. Most people really don’t care how celebrities act in their private lives. For others who regularly tune into top rated shows like Desperate Housewives, The Real Housewives of….., The Bad Girls Club, Real World, etc. Tiger’s lifestyle is no big deal.

Make no mistake Tiger Woods was apologizing and sucking up to past, present, and future corporate advertisers. After all, Woods didn’t become the first pro sports billionaire by just sinking birdies. In fact, compared to the average golf pro Tiger Woods doesn’t really play that much golf; often skipping out on “minor” tournaments. Even at his level, Woods could probably only pocket several million dollars per year by just playing golf. It’s Buick (GM), American Express, and Nike that made him a billionaire. I still don’t quite understand how an athlete or a celebrity can make someone purchase an item that they otherwise wouldn’t be interested in.

Gee……..I was really considering a Mercedes E-Class, but because of Tiger Woods, I think I’ll go with the Buick Park Avenue!

Much like our President, Barack Obama, Tiger Woods is at his best when he and his people have total control over his environment and public image. Like Obama without his teleprompter, the real-life Tiger Woods falls short of the naively grand expectations of many people.

Speaking of apologies, I would much rather get an apology from Barack Obama for exploding the national debt and the budget deficit, for trying to destroy our healthcare system, and for basically trying to turn the greatest country in the history of man into a colder version of Venezuela.  I won’t hold my breath waiting.
